Congressman Tom Barrett used his social media platform to address the ongoing government funding negotiations, expressing criticism toward Senate Democrats for their handling of recent legislative efforts.
On September 30, 2025, Barrett stated, "The House passed a clean, bipartisan government funding bill 11 days ago. It’s not too late for Senate Democrats to stop blocking this straightforward plan and keep the government open."
Later that evening, he reiterated his position as the deadline approached: "Government funding expires in four and a half hours, and Senate Democrats just voted to shut down the government AGAIN. The House did its job and passed a bipartisan bill to keep the government open. It’s time to ask why Senate Democrats are so opposed to doing the same." This message was posted on September 30, 2025.
Continuing his commentary into October 1, Barrett remarked, "Whoever said 'third time's the charm' underestimated how hard Democrats would work to keep our government shut down."
Government shutdowns occur when Congress fails to pass appropriations legislation funding federal agencies and operations. Disagreements between the House of Representatives and the Senate over budget priorities have historically led to such impasses. Typically, temporary funding measures—known as continuing resolutions—are used to prevent interruptions in federal services while longer-term negotiations continue.
