Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has issued a renewed warning about potential government imposter scams that may arise during the ongoing federal government shutdown. According to the Attorney General's office, there have not yet been reports of scams related to the shutdown, but officials are concerned that fraudsters could exploit residents’ worries about their federal benefits.
These scams often involve individuals pretending to be government officials and contacting people through calls, texts, or emails. The messages may reference Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, or SNAP benefits and seek to obtain personal information or demand money from recipients.
Attorney General Nessel cautioned against interacting with suspicious messages. "I know a government shutdown can cause uneasiness and uncertainty for many families,” Nessel said. “Scammers take advantage of those fears to try to steal money and personal information. The best defense is to stay calm and verify details directly with the government agency.”
The Attorney General’s office clarified that Social Security and other federal benefits will continue despite the shutdown, though some service delays are possible.
To help protect against these scams, Nessel advised residents to block suspicious texts, emails, or calls; avoid clicking on links or opening attachments; report spam communications; and delete any questionable messages from their devices.
Nessel also reminded consumers that legitimate government agencies will not request personal information by email, phone call, or text message. They will send official notices by mail with payment options but will never demand money through digital channels or ask for payment via prepaid gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or pay apps.
Residents who believe they have been targeted by a scam are encouraged to contact the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Team by mail at P.O. Box 30213 in Lansing, MI 48909; by phone at 517-335-7599 or toll-free at 877-765-8388; by fax at 517-241-3771; or through an online complaint form.
