Crews from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources are continuing to address hot spots at the Benzie Road Fire in Roscommon County, which has now been fully contained after burning 101 acres. Officials urge the public to avoid the area over the weekend to allow fire crews space to work.

The department is reminding those heading north for activities such as bow hunting or enjoying fall colors to exercise caution regarding fire safety. Despite cooler temperatures, a period of dry weather has increased the risk of wildfires, particularly in the northern Lower Peninsula where last spring’s ice storm left downed trees and branches.

Paul Rogers, fire prevention specialist for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, said, “Nine out of 10 wildfires in Michigan are started by human activities and we’d like to see everyone keep that in mind, especially in the area affected by the ice storm.”

Anyone planning to burn leaves or yard debris is advised to check online for a burn permit. Residents in the southern Lower Peninsula should consult their local fire department or municipality to confirm if burning is allowed.

Fire officials emphasize never leaving any fire unattended and ensuring campfires are completely extinguished by drenching with water, stirring ashes, and repeating the process. Additional recommendations include keeping a hose or water source nearby when burning, maintaining small campfires and bonfires, preventing sparks from trailer chains or equipment on dry grass, and not burning plastic or hazardous materials. Using a burn barrel with a screen on top is also suggested for burning paper, leaves, and natural materials.
