Crews from the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will conduct routine inspections on the Portage Lake Lift Bridge, which connects Houghton and Hancock. The work is scheduled to begin on Monday, October 20, and continue through Friday, October 24. During this period, drivers should anticipate single-lane closures on the bridge, but at least one lane in each direction will remain open.

The bridge will not be lifted for vessels between 7 p.m. and 3 a.m. from October 20 to October 22 while inspections are carried out. However, the bridge will stay at an intermediate position so that boats not needing a full opening can still pass underneath at any time.

The inspections were originally planned for earlier in the month but were postponed until next week.

“These inspections will help ensure continued safe and reliable operation of the bridge,” according to MDOT.
