Governor Gretchen Whitmer has announced that 39 villages and small cities in Michigan will receive grants for road repairs through the Community Service Infrastructure Fund (CSIF) Category B program. The program, administered by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), targets communities with populations under 10,000.

The CSIF was established by the state Legislature in 2018 to support road projects in smaller communities. Projects were chosen based on factors such as coordination with other infrastructure work, collaboration with other road agencies, focus on extending the life of roads, and limited access to other funding sources.

"I ran on fixing the damn roads, and I'm proud to keep my promise and get it done," said Gov. Whitmer. "This year's balanced, bipartisan budget makes a record nearly $2 billion annual investment to fix our state and local roads, which will make everyone's drive safer and faster. We're getting this done by ensuring every penny you pay at the pump goes toward our roads. I'm so grateful to legislators on both sides of the aisle for coming together to get this done so we can build reliable roads that last for decades while supporting tens of thousands of good-paying local jobs. We have a lot of work to do, so let's move some dirt and fix those damn roads!"

Grant awards range from $50,000 to $250,000 per project and will fund activities such as road resurfacing, culvert replacement, pavement crack sealing, and other maintenance measures.

The CSIF Category B program was originally enacted in 1987 and reauthorized in 1993 as a temporary solution for small municipalities needing financial assistance for critical transportation projects. The aim is to help ensure that people and goods can move efficiently throughout Michigan’s communities.

A full list of grant recipients includes locations across Antrim, Arenac, Barry, Branch, Eaton, Emmet, Genesee, Ingham, Ionia, Iron, Jackson, Kent, Keweenaw, Leelanau, Manistee, Marquette, Montcalm, Montmorency, Muskegon, Oakland, Oceana, Sanilac, St. Clair, Tuscola, Van Buren, Washtenaw and Wayne counties.

More information about these grants is available on MDOT's TEDF Category B - Villages and Small Cities website: https://www.michigan.gov/mdot/business/grants/tedf/category-b-villages-and-small-cities
