The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has announced that westbound I-94 between I-696 and M-102 (8 Mile Road) in Macomb County will be closed for emergency bridge beam demolition. The closure is scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. on Saturday, October 18, following damage caused by a high-load vehicle striking the Frazho Road bridge over I-94 earlier this month. Both directions of Frazho Road at I-94 remain closed.
According to MDOT, several ramps will also be closed during the operation, including eastbound I-696 to westbound I-94, 12 Mile Road to westbound I-94, eastbound and westbound 11 Mile Road to westbound I-94, 10 Mile Road to westbound I-94, and 9 Mile Road to westbound I-94.
Traffic on westbound I-94 will be detoured using westbound I-696, southbound M-3 (Gratiot Avenue), and eastbound M-102 (8 Mile Road) before returning to westbound I-94.
MDOT stated, "Westbound I-94 will reopen after bridge beam demolition by 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19. MDOT bridge crews will return later this fall to complete additional bridge repairs and reopen eastbound Frazho Road at I-94. Westbound Frazho Road will remain closed until final repairs can be made in 2026."
The department plans further repairs later in the year, with full reopening of the affected roads expected in 2026.
