M-72 traffic in Traverse City will be detoured for two days next week to allow paving work at the new roundabout at the M-72/M-22 intersection. The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) announced that the closure is scheduled from 4 a.m. Monday, October 20, through 10 p.m. Tuesday, October 21, weather permitting.

The affected area includes M-72 at the M-72/M-22 intersection in Traverse City and Elmwood Township, extending just west of the intersection near Tom’s Food Market. Through traffic on M-72 will be closed from Gray Road/Bugai Road to Bay Street. However, all businesses along M-72 will remain open and accessible during this period.

Eastbound M-72 traffic heading toward Traverse City will be detoured via Gray Road, Cedar Run Road, West Front Street, and US-31/M-37 (Division Street) back to M-72. Westbound traffic leaving Traverse City will use US-31/M-37 (Division Street), West Front Street, Cedar Run Road, and Gray Road to return to M-72. A temporary traffic signal will be installed at the Cedar Run Road/Harris Road intersection for both directions.

M-72 and M-22 between US-31/M-37 (Division Street) and Cherry Bend Road will stay open under the control of traffic regulators. However, drivers will not be able to proceed west on M-72 at the roundabout during construction.

MDOT is nearing completion of a $25.8 million project aimed at rebuilding a 2.2-mile section of M-72 (Grandview Parkway) from Division Street in Traverse City and M-22 (Bay Shore Drive) to Cherry Bend Road in Elmwood Township this year. The project involves removing existing pavement layers and restoring road surfaces; improving drainage with new curb and gutter systems as well as storm sewers and culverts; replacing sidewalks and nonmotorized paths; enhancing facilities for local transit buses; upgrading sidewalk ramps for ADA compliance; constructing a roundabout that also incorporates Bay Street; updating Cherry Bend Road’s traffic signals; and making improvements to driveway access management where possible.

“These road closures will provide the safest work environment for paving crews,” according to MDOT.
