Congressman Tom Barrett has repeatedly addressed the ongoing government shutdown in a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter), criticizing Senate Democrats for their actions and expressing concern over its impact on military personnel and veterans.

On October 16, 2025, Barrett stated, "Ten times. Senate Democrats have now voted to keep the government shut down ten times. This obstruction of our bipartisan funding bill has gone on too long and needs to end."

Later that day, he added, "This shutdown is jeopardizing our military’s readiness to defend our nation and keeping critical benefits out of veterans’ hands. Chuck Schumer needs to stop playing political games, reopen the government, and give our nation’s heroes the support they deserve."

Continuing his criticism into the following day, Barrett wrote on October 17: "President Trump is using every available dollar to pay our troops on time during this shutdown, but funds are running out. Senate Democrats need to do the right thing and help us reopen the government to make sure our service members never miss a paycheck."

Government shutdowns occur when Congress fails to pass funding legislation or obtain presidential approval before existing appropriations expire. During these periods, many federal agencies halt operations and employees may be furloughed or work without pay until new funding is authorized. The impact often extends beyond federal workers, affecting services for veterans and military operations.
