Congressman Tom Barrett has used his social media platform to address several issues affecting Michigan, including a significant investment by General Motors (GM), the ongoing government shutdown, and its impact on local communities and service members.

On October 17, 2025, Barrett commented on GM's plans for the Lansing Grand River Assembly Plant. He stated, "This huge investment by GM into the Lansing Grand River Assembly Plant will have a tremendously positive impact on auto workers and our community. Building the next generation of the Cadillac CT5 right here in mid-Michigan will protect good-paying jobs, strengthen our". The announcement follows GM's history of investing in Michigan facilities to maintain production and support local employment.

The following day, Barrett addressed the ongoing federal government shutdown. On October 18, 2025, he wrote, "Each day Senate Democrats let this shutdown continue, the more Michiganders get hurt, including those who can least afford it." The government shutdown has led to disruptions in public services and uncertainty for many Michigan residents.

Later that same day, Barrett highlighted concerns about military pay during the shutdown. He posted on October 18, 2025: "President Trump delivered pay to our troops this week, but unless the shutdown ends, that short-term lifeline will run out. It’s unacceptable for our service members to face financial insecurity because Senate Democrats refuse to help us reopen the government." This statement reflects ongoing debates over federal funding and efforts to ensure continued compensation for military personnel during periods of political impasse.

Shutdowns of the U.S. federal government have historically caused delays in paychecks for federal employees and service members as Congress negotiates appropriations bills. Congressional disputes over budgetary issues often lead to temporary funding gaps that affect a range of public services and programs.
