Senator Elissa Slotkin, currently representing Michigan’s 7th district in the U.S. Congress, used her social media platform on October 20, 2025, to address recent cuts to food assistance programs and to extend greetings for Diwali.
In a post on October 20, Slotkin stated, "Food security is national security. That's why I joined my colleagues in writing a letter to Secretary Brooke Rollins, demanding answers as to why $500 million in food assistance programs was cut." She continued in a follow-up tweet on the same day, "So many Michiganders depend on these programs — and they’re already feeling the impact."
Later that evening, Slotkin also marked a cultural celebration with a message: "Happy Diwali to everyone celebrating today! Today, across our state, our Indian-American communities are celebrating with their families and lighting diyas, or oil lamps, to invite prosperity into their homes and ward off darkness and evil. Wishing a safe, healthy, and happy"
Slotkin’s remarks come as Michigan residents experience changes in federal food assistance programs. The senator has represented Michigan's 7th district since 2019 after succeeding Mike Bishop. She was born in New York City in 1976 and currently resides in Lansing. Slotkin holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Cornell University, earned in 1998.
