A recent survey conducted by MLive found that 68% of Michigan residents believe Republicans are most responsible for the ongoing federal government shutdown. The survey results come as the shutdown, which began on October 1 after Congress failed to pass a full spending bill, continues to affect federal employees and recipients of food benefits.

The standoff in Congress centers partly on the extension of healthcare subsidies through the Affordable Care Act (ACA), set to expire at the end of the year. Temporary funding legislation has also stalled, leaving millions waiting for resolution.

Despite holding majorities in both chambers of Congress and the White House, Republican leaders have not reached an agreement to end the shutdown. The situation has drawn criticism from Michigan voters who participated in MLive’s poll and shared their views with reporters.

MLive reader Dave commented, “Republicans are creating a ‘Sophie’s Choice: either go without food and services now, or pay more for healthcare later.’”

Another respondent, Krissy, said she believes Republicans need to make compromises for progress: “Government has always been a give and take.” According to the survey, about 21% of respondents blamed Democrats for the shutdown.

Linda, another reader, noted that both parties share some responsibility but said, “the Republicans seem least willing to negotiate and compromise at this time. If someone were to offer you a contract and said, ‘just sign it, we will work on those differences later,’ would you sign? The Democrats are correct in pushing back to this nonsense. Both need to come to the table.”

Tom from Portage pointed specifically at Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana: “He claims to be willing to negotiate health care subsidies, but is blocking negotiations by not calling the House back.”
