Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has announced a new consumer protection campaign inspired by the Netflix series "Squid Game." The initiative, organized by the Department of Attorney General’s social media account MI Consumer Protection (@MIConsumerWatch), aims to educate Michigan residents about various scams and how to avoid falling victim.
The campaign, which will run until November 14, features posts, videos, and alerts that illustrate common scam tactics. Topics include sweepstakes scams, auto warranty offers, emotional manipulation schemes, unemployment fraud, and financial scams. The approach uses references from "Squid Game" to demonstrate how scammers create high-pressure situations similar to those depicted in the show.
Nessel said: “Scammers play by their own rules, and they’re always looking for new ways to pull consumers into their schemes. The MI Consumer Watch accounts use pop culture, creativity, and education to provide timely reminders that awareness is the best defense against even the worst scams.”
Michiganders are encouraged to follow @MIConsumerWatch on Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), and LinkedIn for updates. Additional information about the Michigan Consumer Protection Team can be found at mi.gov/consumerprotection.
