After making statements defending former President Donald Trump’s Medicaid cuts, Mike Duggan has said he has "no problems with the Trump administration" during his tenure as Mayor of Detroit.
These remarks come amid concerns about the impact of federal policies on Michigan residents. The Trump administration’s changes to Medicaid are expected to remove more than 700,000 people in Michigan from their health care coverage. Health policy experts have called these Medicaid cuts “disastrous” for the state’s health care system. Additionally, critics argue that other aspects of Trump's agenda have led to higher prices and reduced food assistance for families.
Duggan's comments have prompted questions regarding his political alliances and campaign funding sources. His campaign has received support from prominent Republicans and major donors aligned with Trump, including Ron Weiser, a former chair of the Michigan Republican Party; JC Huizenga, known for involvement in charter schools; and advisers who worked closely with former Governor Rick Snyder on labor legislation. Duggan also attended a fundraiser hosted by a donor who contributed $100,000 to the Trump Victory PAC in 2020 and is linked to an ongoing city towing controversy involving Duggan.
“While Michiganders feel the effects of Donald Trump’s disastrous agenda everyday, Mike Duggan has ‘had no problems with the Trump administration,’” said Michigan Democratic Party spokesperson Derrick Honeyman. “Whether it’s defending Trump’s cuts to Medicaid or using MAGA money to fund his campaign, it’s clear that Mike Duggan can’t be trusted to stand up to Trump and protect Michigan from his catastrophic policies.”
