Sen. Elissa Slotkin, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing Michigan’s 7th district, has used her social media platform to highlight the legacy of the Edmund Fitzgerald and voice concerns about state energy policy in advance of significant anniversaries and decisions.

On November 8, 2025, Slotkin reflected on the historic shipwreck ahead of its 50th anniversary: "The Edmund Fitzgerald was a symbol of Great Lakes shipping, of Michigan industry, of American strength. Over the next few days leading up to the 50th anniversary of this story, I will be sharing some details about why this story lives on." The following day, she continued coverage with another post: "More on the Edmund Fitzgerald ahead of the 50th anniversary on Monday:".

In addition to commemorating local history, Slotkin addressed recent developments in Michigan’s energy sector. On November 9, she commented on federal intervention regarding a state plant: "People in DC may not care who pays the millions to keep this plant open unnecessarily, but Michiganders do — because the cost will eventually be passed on to ratepayers. The state had a plan. The Admin. decided to override it, to the tune of $4.3 million per week."

Elissa Slotkin has served as a member of Congress since replacing Mike Bishop in 2019 and represents Michigan’s 7th District from her home base in Lansing. Born in New York City in 1976 and now aged 46, she is an alumna of Cornell University where she earned her BA degree in 1998.
