Michigan Credit Union League issued the following announcement on April 20
In addition to offering small businesses financial assistance programs, Michigan credit unions have been finding other ways to support local businesses, such as delivering meals from community restaurants to essential workers.
Team One Credit Union, based in Saginaw, has branded their program “#TOCUCares,” which takes purchased food from community eateries and delivers them to healthcare workers at McLaren Caro Region, Marlette Regional Hospital, Covenant Healthcare, Ascension St. Mary’s Hospital, Hurley Medical Center, Ascension Genesys Hospital, McLaren Flint, McLaren Bay Region EMS and Munson Medical Center.
Plans are also in the works to provide meals at the Saginaw VA Medical Center and Memorial Healthcare in Owosso.
“These selfless individuals are putting their own safety at risk while working such long hours to care for those in need that we wanted to do something to say 'Thank You' for all they're doing for our communities,” said Team One Credit Union President/CEO Gerald Hutto.
Team One is partnering with eateries including Richie Rich’s, El Cozumel, The Brentwood, Hoffman’s Deco Deli, Jimmy John’s and Green House Café just to name a few. The credit union offered a special thanks to Shonda Edgerle with UAW Local 598 for helping with the delivery of meals to Flint hospitals.
On April 2, Frankenmuth Credit Union began an initiative that would support local Frankenmuth businesses during COVID-19, giving back to those working in healthcare, postal works and grocery stores. Each day, the credit union selects one of the communities they serve, and then buys lunch from one of their locally owned establishments to be given to these essential workers.
In one week, Frankenmuth Credit Union supported eight businesses by buying lunch from them, feeding 412 local heroes.
“During Michigan’s “Stay Home. Stay Safe.” order, the credit union wanted to show gratitude to the heroes who support us everyday,” said CEO Vickie Schmitzer. “We wanted to give back to the proverbial boots-on-the-ground workers who were essential to sustain or protect the life and wellbeing of Michiganders. Although a small gesture to those with such significant value, we know our Frankenmuth Credit Union staff certainly spread a little cheer, a little hope and a whole bunch of smiles during this uncertain time.”
