Democratic Senators are coming out in support of the recent hype about a possible federal gas tax suspension as gas prices increase, despite concerns about the climate.

Some observers could find this to be politically motivated since most of the supporters are up for re-election in the fall. The Senators also support President Biden's Build Back Better Act, which raises taxes on U.S. oil and gas. Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) was a co-sponsor for the suspension.

“It’s really important that suspending the federal gas tax pass as part of the solution” Stabenow said. “There’s so many pieces of this that we have and we also have to be sure we are bringing our production back to the United States and we’re not dependent on other countries and businesses in other countries.”

Other leaders had opinions on what was causing the price increase.

"Rising gas prices are a global issue caused by the behavior of Russia and other factors," Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) said.

The Wall Street Journal Editorial Board also commented on the situation.

"Senate Democrats who want to suspend the gas tax support President Biden’s Build Back Better Act that would impose myriad new taxes on U.S. oil and gas," the Wall Street Journal Editorial Board said.

The Journal's Editorial Board continued its criticism of the Biden administration's handling of the situation.

"The Biden administration has slow-rolled oil and gas permits, halted lease sales on federal land, suspended leases in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge," the Journal Editorial Board said. "While activist progressive investors abet the industry’s strangulation," they have "pushed financial regulation to deny capital to fossil fuels."

According to AAA, gas prices in Michigan have increased to $3.36 per gallon of regular gas. Diesel costs an average of $3.88 per gallon. In the wake of this situation, Saudi Arabia has become the world's leading producer of oil, a distinction once held by the U.S.

Despite this, an Obama-appointed judge blocked the sale of oil and gas drilling leases in an 80-million acre area of the Gulf of Mexico in January.
