City of Owosso issued the following announcement on Feb 22.
Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) Update:
Over the last 2 years, the WWTP has undergone significant rehabilitation projects in order to increase capacity and prevent sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs). SSOs happen when water comes into the plant faster than it can be processed. When this happens, the excess has to be released into the river. Major rain events can cause this to happen. Before the headworks rehabilitation project, the plant would back up and cause an SSO when it started receiving about 9,000 gallons per minute.
The rain and snowmelt last week caused flooding in many places around the county. During that time the plant was receiving 11,000 gallons of wastewater per minute. The City of Owosso is pleased to announce there were no backups at the plant and no SSOs in the collection system.
