As the holiday season approaches, Michigan State University experts are offering insights on various aspects of retail and consumer behavior. With Black Friday nearing, these specialists provide guidance on managing supply chain issues, avoiding counterfeit products, and enhancing shopping experiences.

Saleem Alhabash, a professor at MSU’s Center for Anti-Counterfeiting and Product Protection (A-CAPP), emphasizes the importance of vigilance when shopping online to avoid scams. “The thrill of a good deal is not worth the potential harm that can result from using and consuming a fake product," he advises.

Kari Kammel, director at A-CAPP, highlights the risks associated with third-party sellers. She suggests purchasing directly from manufacturers or trusted retailers to minimize counterfeit risks. "If you do think you’ve purchased a counterfeit online, you should report to the platform," she notes.

Patricia T. Huddleston from MSU's Department of Advertising and Public Relations discusses strategies retailers are employing due to a shorter holiday season. "Retailers are beginning to use AI technology to assist consumers with shopping," she says.

Jason Miller from MSU’s Department of Supply Chain Management points out that despite past disruptions, supply chains have stabilized. "Supply chain glitches have fallen back to levels consistent with what was observed prior to the COVID-19 pandemic," he observes.

Simone Peinkofer addresses the environmental impact of e-commerce returns. She warns about sustainability issues arising from returned goods, noting significant emissions generated by this process.

Stanley Lim examines challenges faced by retailers amid high e-commerce sales and economic pressures. He suggests that retailers focus on efficient return policies and inventory management to meet consumer demands during peak seasons.

Tom DeWitt stresses the need for seamless online shopping experiences during busy times. He believes comprehensive reviews and shipment tracking are crucial for maintaining customer satisfaction.

MSU experts continue to offer their expertise in helping both consumers and retailers navigate this complex holiday shopping landscape effectively.
