Michigan State University (MSU) is preparing for a significant event on April 11, with plans to host over 50 learning, career, and entertainment activities as part of the 2024 Take Your Child to Work Day. This annual occasion is modeled after the national Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day, offering children insights into various professional environments.

"MSU encourages employees to bring a special child or children in their life to campus to experience their workplace along with fun and educational experiences," stated Jaimie Hutchison, Director of the WorkLife Office. "The day is designed to get kids on campus to learn more about what the adults in their lives do at work and to spark curiosity about the exciting things MSU has to offer."

This year sees an increase in participation from university departments, with over 45 units contributing 53 tours and activities—a 19% rise compared to last year. "We are grateful for the enthusiasm of the units and departments," expressed Rachel Perez, WorkLife Office consultant and event coordinator. "It’s incredible to see the growth in activities and the participation across the university."

Last year's event saw attendance from 1,600 individuals, while projections for this year estimate between 1,600 and 1,800 participants. The day's activities are primarily aimed at children aged eight through seventeen but remain open to all ages.

Participants can engage in diverse activities ranging from ice skating and obstacle courses to scientific explorations like smashing nuclei. Animal enthusiasts have opportunities such as visiting honeybees or cattle at MSU's Dairy Cattle Teaching and Research Center. Some events require specific attire like closed-toe shoes or personal equipment; hence downloading the program beforehand is advised.

The scheduled tours will run from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m., with a lunch break planned between 11 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. A central feature of this day is the Central Certificate Ceremony held at Shaw Hall Basement West Study Lounge from 12:15 p.m. until 1 p.m., where children can meet Sparty for photo opportunities and share drawings depicting their dream jobs.

The entire day's proceedings will take place on MSU's East Lansing campus.
