During the final Board of Trustees meeting for 2024, Michigan State University (MSU) recognized outgoing Board Chair Dan Kelly and Trustee Dianne Byrum for their years of service. Chair Kelly has been a board member since 2017, serving as vice chair from January 2019 before becoming chair in March 2024. His roles included being MSU's representative on several committees and leading efforts to improve governance and accountability.
Trustee Byrum joined the board in 2008 and was chair from 2017 to 2021. With a background in agricultural economics, she supported the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and co-directed the Michigan Political Leadership Program at MSU. She was named one of Michigan’s top influential women by Crain’s Detroit Business in 2021.
“Trustees Kelly and Byrum exemplify what it means to be dedicated to public service,” said MSU President Kevin M. Guskiewicz, Ph.D., expressing gratitude for their contributions.
Under Article 4 of the Board bylaws, Trustee Kelly Tebay will become chair, and Trustee Brianna Scott will be vice chair starting January 1, 2025. “It is an honor to serve as chair," Tebay stated, emphasizing her commitment to advancing MSU's mission.
The trustees also approved upgrades for Spartan Stadium. These include replacing video boards and renovating suites with modern facilities. Long-term plans involve structural improvements for better safety and fan experience. “Today’s action by the board is a step towards ensuring that it remains a constant for the next 100 years," said Alan Haller, MSU Vice President and Director of Athletics.
Additionally, a revised investment policy was approved, which includes forming a committee to address investment concerns raised by students, faculty, and staff. The spending rate from the endowment will increase from 4.4% to 4.8%.
Research presentations were given by Rodney Whitaker from the College of Music and Carmen Bradford on mentorship in jazz studies.
Other approvals included property purchase authorization for the Dairy Cattle Teaching Center and funds functioning as endowments for various projects.
The next Board meeting is scheduled for February 7, 2025.
