Representative Elissa Slotkin, who has served in the U.S. Congress representing Michigan’s 7th district since 2019, shared her insights and concerns regarding the handling of classified information on social media. Her remarks highlighted potential security risks stemming from current practices.
On March 25, 2025, Rep. Slotkin expressed her disapproval over what she perceives as a mishandling of classified information within governmental operations. She stated, "I've worked at the White House for both Democrat and Republican Presidents and I've never seen this kind of mishandling of classified info. It's sloppy at best and puts the military involved in these sensitive operations at risk." Slotkin emphasized the gravity of such issues by promising further explanation.
Continuing her thread on March 25, 2025, Slotkin elaborated on standard security protocols she adhered to during her tenure dealing with classified documents. She explained that for years she would secure her phone daily due to safety concerns related to handling classified materials. She remarked, "For years, I locked up my phone every day b/c it wasn't safe to bring it into an office where we handled and talked about classified docs." According to Slotkin, individuals involved in such sensitive work are well aware of these protocols.
Further highlighting potential threats from foreign entities like China, Russia, and Iran, Slotkin addressed their persistent efforts to breach security by targeting electronic devices used by those handling classified information. On March 25, 2025, she wrote: "We also know that China, Russia, and Iran are constantly trying to hack the phones of everyone in that group chat." To counteract these threats effectively, Slotkin pointed out the necessity of using separate computer networks specifically designed for managing classified data.
