Congressman Tom Barrett of Michigan's 7th District has reached out to the Social Security Administration (SSA) with a formal request to reconsider any plans for permanently closing the Owosso field office. In his communication to Leland Dudek, Acting Commissioner of the SSA, Barrett emphasized the necessity of maintaining in-person services for residents of Shiawassee County.

Barrett expressed concern about the potential closure, stating, “This location is the only SSA field office in Shiawassee County, a rural community with limited public transportation and unreliable broadband.” He warned that removing this access point would impose significant difficulties on over 1,400 individuals who depend on it for essential benefits and support.

He further urged immediate action if repairs to the current facility are not feasible. “If the current building is in such poor condition that repairs can’t be completed promptly, I urge you to find a new or temporary location in the area to continue serving this community. Shiawassee County deserves better than silence and delay,” he stated.

The Owosso SSA office at 1350 E Main Street has been closed for more than four months due to ongoing facility issues, including an unresolved odor problem. This closure forces many local residents, particularly seniors and those with disabilities, to travel long distances for basic services.
