Senator Elissa Slotkin, representing Michigan's 7th district in the U.S. Congress since 2019, recently addressed concerns regarding presidential powers and foreign influence through a series of tweets on May 12, 2025.

In her first tweet of the day, Slotkin emphasized that "This shouldn’t be a partisan issue. No President should be able to line their own pockets by issuing their own cryptocurrency." The statement reflects her stance against potential conflicts of interest arising from personal financial gains through governmental actions.

Later that day, she recounted an experience from her tenure at the Pentagon. She stated, "Case in point: When I was at the Pentagon, I was the point of contact for the FBI as they investigated a mid-level official for accepting gifts, including allegedly a motorcycle, from Qatar, and failing to report them." This anecdote highlights her involvement in addressing issues related to ethics and transparency within government operations.

Continuing on this theme, Slotkin tweeted about accountability measures for government officials. She remarked that "If any government official accepted a gift even a *fraction* as valuable as this, there would be a full investigation, and potential firings due to concerns of foreign influence." Her comments underscore the importance of maintaining integrity and preventing undue foreign influence in U.S. governance.

Elissa Slotkin was born in New York City in 1976 and resides in Lansing. She is an alumna of Cornell University with a Bachelor’s degree earned in 1998.
