On May 15, 2025, Senator Slotkin tweeted about her recent meeting with a group of Syrian-Michiganders just before the announcement of sanctions relief. She expressed optimism that "the Syrian diaspora, anchored by a strong and successful community in Michigan, is ready to help start a new chapter in Syria" (source).
In another tweet posted on the same day, she acknowledged the challenges ahead for Syria but emphasized her hopes for peace: "The road to peace and stability will be long and winding," yet she wishes for Syrians to have "a real shot of leaving war and extremism behind them" (source).
Later that day, Slotkin mentioned her meeting with Vian Dakhil, an Iraqi Member of Parliament known for advocating for the Yazidi community since ISIS attacked them in 2014. Slotkin praised Dakhil as "a powerful voice" against such violence (source).
Elissa Slotkin has been serving Michigan's 7th District since replacing Mike Bishop in 2019. Born in New York City in 1976, she graduated from Cornell University with a BA in 1998 and currently resides in Lansing.
