Betsy K. McIntyre, a 69-year-old resident of Irons, Michigan, was sentenced to 20 to 40 years in prison for the second-degree murder of her husband. The sentencing took place in the 27th Circuit Court in Lake County, presided over by Judge David Glancy. McIntyre had pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree murder in August after being initially charged with first-degree murder for stabbing her husband.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel commented on the outcome: “I hope this sentence brings some measure of justice for the victim’s family. As Attorney General, my office has consistently stepped in to support counties during times of vacancies. Without this assistance, prosecutions would stall, murderers would walk free, and victims would be denied justice. This work is only possible because of the resources provided through our budget, and any shutdown or drastic cuts would take that away from Michigan residents when they need it most.”

The Michigan Department of Attorney General began overseeing prosecutorial duties in Lake County after the resignation of the county's prosecuting attorney earlier this year. The department will continue these responsibilities until a new prosecutor is appointed or until October 1 if there is a state government shutdown or major budget reductions affecting the department.
