Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has reissued a consumer alert on ransomware as part of Cybersecurity Awareness Month. Ransomware is a type of malicious software that can take control of electronic devices, locking users out by encrypting their files or entire systems and demanding payment for access.
“Ransomware can devastate residents and businesses by locking them out of their devices and demanding payment for access,” Nessel said. “By understanding how this malware works and taking proactive steps, Michiganders can better protect their data from cyberattacks.”
The Attorney General’s office explained that ransomware often infects computers when users open attachments or click links in unsolicited emails, a tactic known as phishing. These messages frequently appear to come from trusted sources but are designed to trick recipients into downloading harmful software.
To reduce the risk of ransomware attacks, residents are advised to use comprehensive security software on all devices and keep it updated. Regularly updating all software helps address vulnerabilities through patches included in updates. People should be cautious with emails and downloads, avoiding responses to unknown senders and only downloading applications from trusted sources. Even if an email appears to come from someone familiar, the office recommends verifying the message if it seems unusual or generic before clicking any links or opening attachments.
Additional tips include never clicking on links or opening attachments in unsolicited emails, avoiding public Wi-Fi networks due to security risks, backing up data regularly onto external hard drives or cloud services, unplugging external devices when not in use, and refraining from using USB sticks from unknown sources.
