President Donald Trump has issued an executive order titled “Preserving and Protecting the Integrity of American Elections,” which mandates that individuals must provide proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote. The order also instructs federal agencies to assist states in verifying voter citizenship, and it warns that states not complying may lose federal election funding.
Jim Runestad, Chairman of the Michigan Republican Party, expressed his full support for this measure. He stated, “It’s a clear message: the days of loose voter registration and shady roll maintenance are over. This is about restoring confidence in our elections—and holding those in charge accountable.”
In conjunction with the executive order, the Republican National Committee (RNC) has launched what it describes as its largest-ever election integrity initiative. The RNC is seeking detailed records from states regarding their procedures for maintaining and updating voter rolls.
RNC Chairman Michael Whatley commented, “Voters have a right to know that their states are properly maintaining voter rolls… The RNC stands ready to act if states fail to do so.”
Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson has publicly stated her intention to challenge President Trump’s executive order in court. According to statements made on social media, she plans to oppose the order throughout the legal process.
Chairman Runestad called on Michigan Republicans to support President Trump and the RNC’s efforts, emphasizing what he sees as an important opportunity for electoral reform in both Michigan and across the country.
The Michigan Republican Party continues its outreach for supporters who wish to participate in efforts related to election security.
