Governor Gretchen Whitmer is facing criticism for not calling a special election to fill the vacant seat in Michigan's 35th State Senate District. The vacancy has left more than 270,000 residents without representation in Lansing for over 75 days, which is reportedly longer than any delay by a Michigan governor in at least three decades.

The Michigan Republican Party alleges that Governor Whitmer is delaying the election to maintain her party’s narrow 19-18 majority in the Senate. "Whitmer is holding our democracy hostage to protect her party’s grip on power. She’s dodging accountability, putting politics over people, and treating Michigan taxpayers like an afterthought while she campaigns on the international stage," the statement reads.

While this vacancy remains unfilled, Governor Whitmer recently traveled abroad. According to the Michigan Republican Party, she embarked on a taxpayer-funded trip to the Middle East with an entourage that included state employees and community figures. The disclosed cost of this trip was $176,232.64; however, because the governor's office is exempt from public records laws, full expenses may not be known.

During her travels, Whitmer signed an agreement with Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al-Qasimi. The party's statement claims he has links to Iran and alleged involvement in money-laundering operations intended to evade U.S. sanctions.

Governor Whitmer has since departed for another official visit to the United Kingdom and Ireland—her second European trip in less than four months—while constituents in the affected district remain without representation.

"Call the election, Governor. Stop the games. Start doing your job," concludes the statement from party officials.

Supporters of the Michigan Republican Party are being urged to continue their backing as they advocate for prompt action regarding legislative representation.
