Twenty-six days after being elected Chairman of the Michigan Republican Party, State Senator Jim Runestad provided an update on the party’s direction and plans for the 2026 election cycle.
Runestad stated that he has held numerous meetings in Michigan and Washington D.C. with organizations focused on electing Republicans. He said these discussions have been productive and emphasized that Republicans nationwide are working to prepare for upcoming elections.
He acknowledged challenges faced during his first weeks as chairman but expressed confidence in the team being assembled. “Just in the last week, I had the privilege of meeting with our very talented and hardworking district chairs and vice chairs, which only reinforced my optimism about our path forward. I look forward to sharing the status of some important things in the coming weeks and months. It is time to right this ship and return the MIGOP to the political machine that it has been in the past. I am going to need help from all of you to make this a reality,” Runestad said.
Runestad praised current Republican leadership at both state and national levels, highlighting efforts by House Speaker Matt Hall and House Republicans who recently passed legislation to permanently reduce Michigan’s income tax rate from 4.25% to 4.05%. He thanked Speaker Hall and House Republicans for their work, stating this policy will benefit Michigan families.
In contrast, Runestad criticized Senate Democrats for supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies through a recent resolution. He described these policies as unsuccessful over recent years and called for a change in leadership by electing a Republican majority in 2026.
Looking ahead, Runestad outlined priorities such as improving communication within the party, increasing volunteer engagement, supporting candidates, and providing resources through a new website at mi.gop. He encouraged questions or scheduling requests to be directed via email.
“I look forward to leading this Grand Old Party in the coming months. Michigan is ground zero for 2026. Our work starts right now. This means working together. This means opening lines of communication between the MIGOP and the donors, volunteers and delegates that make our party a success. This means knocking on thousands of doors and providing candidates with the support they need to WIN,” Runestad said.
He concluded by thanking supporters: “Your support is invaluable. It fuels our mission to Make Michigan Great Again and keep our state a land of promise and prosperity for everyone.”
