Governor Gretchen Whitmer has directed that U.S. and Michigan flags at the State Capitol Complex and on all public buildings and grounds throughout Michigan be lowered to half-staff in honor of the victims of a shooting at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township, Genesee County. The order takes effect immediately and will continue through Friday, October 3, 2025.
“My heart is breaking for this community,” Governor Whitmer said. “Violence anywhere, especially in a place of worship, is unacceptable. I am grateful to the first responders who took action quickly. To honor those we have lost, I am ordering flags to be lowered across Michigan. Our state is in mourning alongside the victims, their families, and the entire community in Grand Blanc Township.”
Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist II also responded to the incident: "I am devastated by the shooting this morning that took place at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Such a horrific act of violence—towards anyone, anywhere—is unjustified. I’m grateful to the local police officers, fire, and EMS for their quick response. Let's keep holding each other close."
The state has encouraged residents, businesses, schools, local governments, and organizations across Michigan to join in displaying flags at half-staff as a sign of remembrance and solidarity with those affected by the tragedy.
According to protocol described by state officials, flags should first be raised briefly to full staff before being lowered to half-staff for display during this period; they should return to full staff on Saturday, October 4.
