State Representative Nancy Jenkins-Arno has announced the allocation of $12 million in state funding for the Sam Beauford Woodworking Institute (SBWI) in Adrian. The funds are part of Michigan’s Fiscal Year 2026 budget and are intended to support skilled trades and educational infrastructure in Lenawee County.
The investment will allow SBWI to expand its programs, increase its facilities, and accommodate more students from across the country who are interested in careers in fine woodworking and craftsmanship.
“This is a huge win not just for Lenawee County, but for the entire state of Michigan,” said Jenkins-Arno. “The Sam Beauford Woodworking Institute is a gem in our community, and this investment will ensure it becomes a national hub for skilled trades education. These are high-demand, high-skill jobs that attract families, create economic opportunities, and have a lasting impact on our region.”
Founded in 2015, SBWI has received national attention for its focus on craftsmanship and workforce development. The new funding will be used to expand classroom and workshop space, purchase new equipment, and increase enrollment capacity to meet industry demand.
“This funding is transformational,” said Luke Barnett, President of the Sam Beauford Woodworking Institute. “We’re deeply grateful to Rep. Jenkins-Arno for her leadership and vision. With these resources, we can grow our programs, attract talent from around the country, and give more students the opportunity to build rewarding, hands-on careers. The impact of this investment will be felt for generations.”
Michigan officials continue to emphasize skilled trades as key components of economic growth by supporting institutions like SBWI.
