Following a shooting and fire at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc, Michigan, Attorney General Dana Nessel has issued a warning about the legal consequences of making false or copycat threats. Authorities have reported several bomb threats across the state after the incident.

“In the wake of the heartbreaking events in Grand Blanc, the last thing our communities need is fear and disruption from copycat threats,” said Nessel. “Threats of violence cost local communities tens of thousands of dollars and can put law enforcement at risk. Whether made with the intent to harm or as pranks, they are real crimes with very real consequences.”

Under Michigan law, making a false report or threat involving bombs is considered a crime. Charges may include malicious use of a telecommunications device (a misdemeanor punishable by up to six months), communicating placement or detonation of an explosive device (a felony carrying up to 10 years), and communicating a threat or false report of terrorism (a felony with up to 20 years imprisonment).

In addition, Michigan enacted the Institutional Desecration Act in 2023. This law imposes criminal penalties for those who make true threats or intentionally damage, deface, vandalize, or threaten religious institutions and related facilities. The maximum penalty for this felony is 10 years in prison and/or a fine up to $15,000 or three times the value of damages.

Residents with information about false reports or threats are encouraged to contact local law enforcement agencies or their nearest Michigan State Police post. The MSP provides online resources on reporting suspicious behavior. Those with information relevant to the Grand Blanc investigation should reach out to the FBI at 800-CALL-FBI or online.
