The Michigan House Judiciary Committee has reviewed House Bills 5079 and 5080, which aim to increase penalties for forcibly disarming police officers or causing injury during such incidents. The bills are sponsored by state Representative Mike Mueller.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel expressed support for the proposed legislation. In a statement, she said, “The brave men and women of law enforcement put their lives on the line each day to protect us. When someone tries to disarm an officer, it endangers that individual and the safety of everyone they’ve sworn an oath to defend. This legislation strengthens our ability to hold violent offenders fully accountable, and I urge the House to pass this legislative package swiftly.”

If enacted, the bills would impose stricter consequences on those who attempt to take firearms from law enforcement officers by force or who injure officers during such attempts.
