House Republicans in Michigan have announced a budget agreement with the Legislature and the governor that they say will benefit families across the state. Representative Sarah Lightner, who chairs the House Judiciary Committee, emphasized that the agreement addresses key issues such as reducing government waste, increasing funding for schools, improving infrastructure, and enhancing public safety.
Lightner stated, “The reason this deal exists is because House Republicans refused to accept Lansing’s bad habits. We drew a line, cut away the bloat, and delivered a budget that protects families, respects taxpayers, funds our schools, and gives law enforcement the resources they deserve. That’s accountability. That’s law-and-order.”
According to Lightner, more than $5 billion previously lost to waste, fraud, and abuse will be redirected toward public priorities under this new framework. Nearly $2 billion of these funds are allocated for repairing local roads and bridges throughout Michigan. The plan also includes a new $115 million Public Safety Trust Fund designed to support police officers and first responders. Additionally, significant investments are earmarked for classrooms to provide students and teachers with necessary resources.
“As Judiciary Chair, I deal with the fallout of crime every day,” Lightner said. “This agreement is a win for victims, for communities that want safer streets, for families who depend on strong schools, and for taxpayers who are sick of Lansing wasting their money. We’re proving government can work for the people when it’s forced to focus on priorities that matter.”
