Governor Gretchen Whitmer has signed a continuation budget to keep Michigan's government running while lawmakers work to finalize the state's full fiscal year budget. The move comes after the Michigan House and Senate reached a bipartisan agreement last week on passing a complete state budget. Negotiations between the administration and legislative leaders are ongoing.
The continuation budget ensures that state operations remain open and Michiganders continue to have access to government services during this interim period. State employees will also continue to receive their pay as usual.
"The Michigan state government will stay open," said Governor Whitmer. "We’re on the verge of making huge progress to fix our state and local roads, feed our kids at school, cut taxes for seniors and working families, protect access to affordable health care, and keep Michiganders safe in their communities. In the meantime, state government will continue providing uninterrupted services and state employees will work today, getting things done for their fellow Michiganders."
Under this temporary measure, Michigan can maintain its spending levels until the full budget is finalized by lawmakers and signed into law by the governor. Once legislative approval is secured, clerks will prepare the final version for transmittal to Governor Whitmer for her review and signature.
