Crews from the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will conduct routine inspections on the Portage Lake Lift Bridge, which connects Houghton and Hancock, starting Monday, October 6. The inspections are expected to last through Friday, October 10.
During this period, drivers should be prepared for single-lane closures on the bridge. However, at least one lane in each direction will remain open throughout the inspection process.
The bridge will not be lifted for vessels from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. nightly between October 6 and October 8 while work is underway. "The bridge will be set at the intermediate position to allow boats not requiring a full opening to pass under the bridge at any time," according to MDOT.
According to MDOT, these routine inspections are intended to maintain safe and reliable operations of the Portage Lake Lift Bridge.
