Genevieve Peters Scott has announced her candidacy for the Republican nomination in Michigan’s U.S. Senate race, directly challenging Mike Rogers. Peters Scott, who is known for her involvement in the January 6 Capitol attack and her support of former President Donald Trump, entered the race after nearly matching Rogers’ vote count in a straw poll at a GOP event before officially declaring her run.
Last month, at the 9th Congressional District straw poll, Peters Scott received 45 votes compared to Rogers’ 56. Her strong showing led to the exclusion of the U.S. Senate race from the Michigan GOP’s Mackinac Republican Leadership Conference straw poll, which included all other major statewide races.
Peters Scott has described herself as a “rabid” and “proud” Trump supporter and is recognized as a prominent figure among those who promoted claims of election fraud following the 2020 presidential election. She also has documented connections to the Proud Boys organization.
Michigan Democratic Party spokesperson Joey Hannum commented on Rogers’ position within his party: “Mike Rogers nearly lost in his own party’s straw poll – before his primary opponent had even declared her candidacy,” Hannum said. “Rogers has proven time and again he’s a failed candidate who can’t win over Michigan voters, and his inability to consolidate his own party’s base shows Republicans know it too.”
According to reporting by MIRS, Peters Scott’s campaign was anticipated prior to her official announcement on September 24.
