The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has announced that it will carry out routine maintenance on the Portage Lake Lift Bridge connecting Houghton and Hancock on Thursday, October 16. The maintenance involves greasing the bridge cables and will require several lifts of the bridge, each lasting up to 30 minutes.
These lifts are scheduled to start after midnight and be finished by 6 a.m. on Thursday. During this time, the bridge will be closed to vehicle, pedestrian, and bicycle traffic. MDOT noted that this schedule may change depending on weather conditions.
According to MDOT, "This work will help ensure continued safe and reliable operation of the bridge."
The maintenance is part of ongoing efforts by MDOT to keep transportation infrastructure in good working order for public safety.
