Applications are now open for Michigan businesses to apply for $29 million in grants through the Going PRO Talent Fund, according to an announcement from the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO). The grants are available for Fiscal Year 2026 Cycle 1, and applications must be submitted by October 30 through local Michigan Works! agencies. Award announcements are expected later in the fall.
Since its inception in 2014, the Going PRO Talent Fund has distributed over $309 million in grants to nearly 8,500 businesses. This funding has provided training opportunities for more than 230,000 workers across Michigan. The grants are intended to help employers offer training that leads to industry-recognized credentials and improved career prospects for employees.
However, LEO noted that there is a 42% reduction in program funding for fiscal year 2026. As a result, it is projected that about 300 fewer employers will receive awards and approximately 10,000 fewer workers will benefit from training support during the two award cycles.
Stephanie Beckhorn, director of LEO’s Office of Employment and Training, said, “The Going PRO Talent Fund is helping Michiganders gain the skills that translate directly into better jobs, higher wages and more stability at home. At the same time, employers are able to fill critical skill gaps with talent that’s prepared to succeed from day one. Stronger families and stronger businesses strengthen Michigan’s economy and keep our state moving forward.”
The program aims to improve operational efficiency, productivity, and employee retention rates for participating businesses by supporting skills development. According to LEO, workers who complete training funded by the Talent Fund see an average hourly wage increase of 7.2% six months after completion.
Training activities supported by the fund include classroom instruction, on-the-job training for new hires, and Registered Apprenticeships. These options allow employers of various sizes to address specific skill gaps while enabling workers to earn credentials and experience needed for career advancement.
The application process prioritizes emerging workforce needs and focuses on industry-recognized certifications that have value across multiple sectors. Employers who have not received a Talent Fund award in the past two fiscal years will be given additional consideration.
The Talent Fund aligns with Michigan’s first Statewide Workforce Plan, which emphasizes expanding career opportunities, removing employment barriers, and helping employers access skilled workers.
Krista Johnson, LEO Workforce Development Director, stated: “The Going PRO Talent Fund is about practical results: workers earn credentials, employers build the talent they need, and Michigan’s economy grows stronger. By connecting people to credentials that matter in today’s job market, we’re helping families achieve stability while giving businesses the workforce they need to expand, compete and create more opportunities across the state.”
Employers from industries such as advanced manufacturing, healthcare, construction, clean energy, and information technology are encouraged to apply. Training is delivered in partnership with local Michigan Works! agencies that collaborate with employers on customized solutions.
Jenn Deamud, Executive Vice President of Workforce at Michigan Works! Berrien, Cass, Van Buren said: “The Going PRO Talent Fund is a powerful resource for employers statewide who are committed to training and upskilling new employees, current staff and apprentices - without the heavy financial burden that training often creates. From conversations with employers in our region, it’s clear these funds give them the ability to strengthen their teams, expand their capacity, and keep growing right here in Michigan.”
The Talent Fund forms part of LEO’s All-Access Michigan approach aimed at removing barriers for both businesses and workers. According to state data Michigan ranks first nationally for adult credential attainment and third for helping adults find employment.
Applications close on Thursday, October 30 at 5 p.m. EDT. Businesses interested in applying should contact their local Michigan Works! Service Center or visit Michigan.gov/MichiganWorks for guidance. More information about the Going PRO Talent Fund can be found at Michigan.gov/TalentFund.
