Congress has voted to end the federal government shutdown, which lasted for 43 days and was the longest in U.S. history. The House approved the Senate's funding agreement with a 222–209 vote after the Senate passed it earlier in the week. This measure will keep the government operating until January 30, 2026.
The Michigan Chamber of Commerce collaborated with Michigan’s Congressional delegation during the shutdown, advocating for an end to the impasse and urging lawmakers from both parties to reach an agreement. “The Michigan Chamber worked with the Michigan Congressional delegation to vocalize the importance of keeping the government open, and called publicly for lawmakers on both sides of the aisle to come together on a deal,” stated a representative from the organization.
Economic reports highlighted significant impacts during the shutdown period. In Michigan, estimates indicated that each month of closure resulted in approximately $1.6 billion lost from state gross product.
With funding now extended through January, some government services and payments are expected to take time before returning to normal operations. Additionally, no resolution has been reached regarding Affordable Care Act tax credits; if this issue remains unresolved by late January, another government shutdown could occur.
