More than 200 organizations, including the Michigan Chamber of Commerce, have signed a joint letter addressed to Congress voicing opposition to proposed legislation that would restrict the use of arbitration agreements. The coalition argues that the pending bills would undermine the current arbitration system and class action waiver provisions, which are commonly used in contexts such as employment disputes, consumer contracts, data privacy, discrimination claims, and antitrust disputes.
The joint letter contends that the proposed reforms would invalidate millions of existing agreements and reduce access to remedies for individuals and businesses. According to the letter, the main beneficiaries of these changes would be class action lawyers rather than the people the legislation aims to protect.
The Michigan Chamber of Commerce is among the signatories and encourages interested parties to review the joint letter or contact Wendy Block for further information.
