The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will move forward with the next phase of its $7.6 million reconstruction project on M-71 (Washington Street) in Owosso, starting Friday, October 24.
According to MDOT, this stage focuses on the section of M-71 known as Water Street, between M-21 and Washington Street. As part of the new traffic plan, the Jerome Avenue/Washington Street/Water Street intersection will reopen to allow eastbound vehicles to continue through to Washington Street and Jerome Avenue. Construction will then shift to the north side of M-71 (Water Street), closing westbound lanes and rerouting westbound drivers via Washington Street and M-21. Eastbound traffic will not be detoured during this period.
During milling and paving work, intersections at Ball Street and Comstock Street along M-71 (Water Street) will remain closed.
This phase involves several improvements including milling, asphalt resurfacing, rebuilding the roadway, upgrades to water main, storm sewer, sanitary sewer systems, curb and gutter installation, sidewalk enhancements, ADA-compliant ramps, signal modernization, and new pavement markings. The bridge over the Shiawassee River on M-71 is also scheduled for improvements. MDOT expects all work in this phase to be completed by the end of November.
