The Hispanic Latino Commission of Michigan (HLCOM) marked its 50th anniversary with a gathering in Lansing that brought together more than 300 attendees, including current and former commissioners, community leaders, elected officials, union representatives, and members of the public. The event recognized the commission’s half-century commitment to advocacy and service for Latinx communities across Michigan.
A central feature of the celebration was the honoring of 51 individuals as Latino Legacy Leaders. Each received a commemorative plaque in recognition of their contributions to advancing and supporting the Latinx community in Michigan. Their achievements were also highlighted throughout the year on HLCOM’s website and Facebook page.
Among those honored as 2025 Latino Legacy Leaders were Hon. Belda Garza, Dr. Ruth Behar, Angela Reyes, Maria Luisa Zavala, Debra Ehrmann, Victoria Arteaga, Luis A. Garcia, Rev. Luis A. Ramos, Eva Torres, Gloria Lara, Dr. Diana Marinez, Alfredo Gonzales, Sandra Calderon-Huezo, Felix Sharpe-Caballero, Dr. Ethriam Cash Brammer, Estrella Crawford, Oscar Moreno, Tania Morris Diaz, Martha Gonzalez Cortes and others.
In addition to legacy leader recognitions, HLCOM awarded certificates to 20 Nuestro Futuro Scholarship recipients for their academic achievement and leadership.
The event also included presentation of the 2025 Hispanic Heritage Awards in several categories: Community Service (Lorenzo Lopez), Educator of the Year (Stephany Yach Saavedra), Arts in the Community (Cynthia Martinez), Young Changemaker (Karinna Martinez), Unsung Hero (Liam (Mon) Lopez-Wagner), and Lifetime Achievement (Mary Vazquez).
Poppy Hernandez, Director of the Office of Global Michigan which oversees HLCOM stated: “These scholarships and awards are a true testament to our commitment to expand economic opportunity and prosperity for all. Global Michigan is proud of HLCOM’s investment into the future of Latinx students and the communities we serve. Together we are fostering a new generation of innovators and leaders who will help shape the future of our state."
Guests at the gala enjoyed cultural performances such as traditional dance by Greater Lansing Ballet Folklorico along with tributes reflecting on HLCOM’s founding in 1975. Commissioners shared memories from earlier years while also highlighting recent accomplishments.
“This was more than a celebration of 50 years,” said HLCOM Executive Director Dr. Isabel Montemayor-Vazquez. “It was a testament to the resilience, vision and contributions of generations of Latinx leaders in Michigan. From those who paved the way to the emerging leaders of tomorrow we are proud to continue uplifting our community.”
Commissioners Florensio Hernandez (Chair), Consuela Barber Lopez, Abril Valdes Siewert (Secretary), Kaylee Moreno Burke, Jose Sanchez, David Sanchez, Johnny Rodriguez (Treasurer), Yadira Garza, Aurora Sauceda (Vice Chair), Rudy Flores, Monteze Morales and Monica Peach participated in presenting awards and welcoming guests at this milestone event.
