Governor Gretchen Whitmer has appointed Cheryl Sweeney to serve on the Monroe County Probate Court. The announcement was made on November 6, 2025.

Sweeney, a resident of La Salle, currently holds the position of chief juvenile court referee for the 38th Judicial Circuit Court, Family Division, and serves as deputy probate register for the Monroe County Probate Court. Her previous experience includes operating her own law office and working as an associate attorney at another firm. She is also a member of the State Bar of Michigan Children’s Law Section and the Referees Association of Michigan.

Governor Whitmer stated, “I’m proud to appoint Cheryl to the Monroe County Probate Court. As a lifelong resident of the area, a longtime employee of the court, and a skilled legal professional, I am confident Cheryl will serve the people of Michigan admirably and uphold the rule of law.”

Sweeney earned her Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Michigan and her Juris Doctor from the University of Toledo College of Law. She graduated from Monroe High School as valedictorian.

In response to her appointment, Sweeney said, “I would like to thank Governor Whitmer for providing me with the opportunity to serve as the next Monroe County Probate Judge. I am deeply honored and humbled by this appointment. It will be my privilege to serve the people of the community I love in this position.”

The appointment fills a partial term created by Judge Frank Arnold’s resignation. Sweeney’s term will conclude at noon on January 1, 2027.
