Senator Elissa Slotkin, a member of the U.S. Congress representing Michigan’s 7th district since 2019, has addressed the ongoing government shutdown and its impact on health care costs in a series of posts on her official social media account.

On November 7, 2025, Slotkin wrote, "This is the longest shutdown in history. I am working to try and bring this to a resolution, but we need the President to get in the game. To be clear, I am insistent on fighting for people facing as much as a 600% increase in health care costs."

Later that day, she reiterated her position regarding health care policy and reopening the government: "For months, I have been clear: If you want my vote, we have to do something to address the cost of health care. We can open the government today with a simple, one-year extension of https://t.co/6af0Z7VUAU subsidies to keep Michiganders' health care from spiking before Jan 1." This statement highlights her insistence on extending subsidies as a condition for supporting measures to end the shutdown.

In an additional post on November 7, Slotkin summarized topics covered in her intelligence briefing: "There is a lot going on this week. And in my Intel Briefing, I go deep on three important topics.

The shutdown, health care and court orders for the President to pay SNAP benefits.

My legislation, the No Troops in Our Street Act

Banning the Presidential pardon"

Slotkin's remarks come amid what she calls "the longest shutdown in history," during which concerns over significant increases in health care costs have become central to negotiations. She emphasizes her commitment to protecting constituents from potential spikes in expenses if federal subsidies are not extended before January 1.

Elissa Slotkin was born in New York City in 1976 and currently resides in Lansing. She earned her BA from Cornell University in 1998 and has represented Michigan’s 7th District since replacing Mike Bishop in Congress.
