Gov. Gretchen Whitmer last month criticized the protesters who gathered outside the Capitol in Lansing to protest the lockdown, but critics argue Whitmer participated in a heated protest in 2012.
"Yesterday’s scene at the Capitol was disturbing to be quite honest, swastikas and Confederate flags, nooses and automatic rifles do not represent who we are as Michiganders," Whitmer said in a May 1 press conference. "This state has a rich history of people coming together in times of crisis."
Opponents of Whitmer argue the protesters legally carried firearms, and no reported violence occured during the protests.
Critics have also pointed out a 2012 right-to-work protest in which Whitmer participated in a Capitol sit-in with Reverend Jessie Jackson.
Although the week-long protests were "relatively civil", a hot dog vendor reported damaged equipment caused by protesters.
Steven Crowder, then-Fox News Contributor, also received a punch in the chin by a union protester, although his YouTube video does not show the moments leading up to the punch.
Whitmer did not respond to requests for comment.
