Mayors Monarch Pledge

Local gov stock 01

City of Eaton Rapids issued the following announcement on Oct 25.

In support of the Mayors Monarch Pledge, we encourage those interested in creating or developing monarch habits to start thinking about how to preserve and prepare milkweed seeds for spring planting. If you have seeds to harvest but nowhere to store them, you may bring them to City Hall during normal business hours and we will store them and plant them in the spring.

Tips: Harvest milkweed seeds when they are ready. You’ll know they are ready for harvest when they are fully dry or start to break open.

Store harvested milkweed seeds in a paper lunch sack. Be sure to store the bag in an unheated, dry environment (a garage or shed would be perfect) and away from mice.

Seeds are ready for planting after the final frost in the spring, typically on or after May 15th.
