They met playing kickball — on rivaling teams

A6

They met playing kickball — on rivaling teams. One lives on the Eastside, the other the West. Now, through their love of books, they're friends and co-proprietors of the first woman-only-owned building in Downtown Lansing.

Christine and Elise own A Novel Concept, an independent bookstore that prioritizes women, queer, BIPOC, and local writers. In the age of algorithms, they’re big on personalized recommendations. “Curation matters,” Christine says. “We want to use our curatorial responsibility to represent all kinds of voices.”

The two bibliophiles have serious love for Lansing and look forward to its growth. “We take a lot of pride in being Lansing business owners,” says Elise, “and we’re excited to be a part of downtown’s revitalization.” Though they both say it’s important to recognize the many cool things already happening in our community.

Looking for your next read? Check out A Novel Concept online or at their new space downtown for a spectrum of handpicked titles and a couple of friendly faces.
