Cutlerville Fire Department awarded two members for their exemplary dedication

On Monday, December 12, 2022, the Cutlerville Fire Department awarded two members for their exemplary dedication on a recent fire scene.

On September 19th, 2022, the Cutlerville Fire Department was dispatched to a home explosion resulting in a structure fire. As responders arrived on the scene, there was a report of a resident trapped on the deck with severe injuries. Deputy Chief Justin Holmes and Captain Mark Grooters combined their efforts to trek through an IDLH environment and locate the victim. Together, Deputy Chief Holmes and Captain Grooters removed her from harm’s way and carried her to a safe location as the remaining structure near the deck was collapsing. Due to the brave and honorable acts that were selflessly carried out by both Deputy Chief Holmes and Captain Grooters, the victim was moved to a safe location and immediately transported to the emergency department.

Captain Grooters was given the Bravery Award for his devotion and selfless acts. Deputy Chief Holmes was given the Honor Award for rescuing the trapped victim. Both men went above and beyond the call that fateful morning.

Five deputies from the Kent County Sheriff's Office were also recognized for their assistance to the Cutlerville Fire Department that morning. They played an integral part in providing Cutlerville Fire with information and victim location. Both CFD and the KCSO have an established working relationship.

Thank you to Gaines Township for allowing us to present during Monday’s board meeting.
