Today, February 15th is NATIONAL SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER DAY.

The City of Owosso would like to thank all of our School Resource Officers for their commitment to protecting Owosso students, faculty, and staff. In honor of National School Resource Officer Day, we’d like to introduce Officer Fiebernitz. Officer Fiebernitz works at Owosso High School.

“I started working in law enforcement in 1987. I worked for the Michigan State Police. In my last four years I was working homicides with the Secure Cities Partnership in Flint, I needed to take some time off after that so I retired in March of 2018.  After a while, I heard that a spot opened up here so I applied and started working as a School Resource Officer in the fall of 2019.

This is my fourth school year. It's changed a little bit, when I started it was just me and Officer Ash but with the recent addition of the two and a half new officers, I can reach out to more kids. Some kids were in middle school when I started that are freshmen or sophomores now. So those are relationships I've established that I enjoy. I am trying to be here for the kids.

I have a handful of kids that like to come up and get a fist bump for the day and we've got our special handshakes and stuff. Some like to just stop and chit-chat about how their day is going, that's the fun part for me.

I think the biggest adjustment is when I was on the road working for MSP and I ran into the 17, 18, and 19-year-olds, I didn't know what had happened in their lives to the point where we were having this interaction.  But by getting to know these kids, I'm understanding a little bit better why some of the kids end up how they do. It's really hard so I just want them to know that there's someone here to talk to.

If they're misbehaving in school, sometimes things are going on at home that are acting themselves out here. So I just try to be a calming influence or someone they can talk to you. I try to tell them if I don't have the answers, I'll try and find the answers that can help.”
